Media Magic
In her novel, The Pirate's Daughter, Margaret Cezair-Thompson's Ian Fleming-based character explains to a young writer that the word "grammar" is a synonym for "gramarye"--Old French or Celtic for "magic". What is magic but creating something out of something smaller?
We editors-journalists-writers believe that we use grammar to string together words into something grander, something that impacts our world--our own form of magic. Images, too, have the magical ability to greatly impact our world with little more than light and shadow, and, these days, electricity.
Are You a News Necromancer?
News outlets: multiple Neal Awards winner Editor & Publisher is once again ready for News Photos of the Year submissions--your own bits of magic. As in the last 10 years, newspaper print photos (this year, published since Sept. 13, 2008) are eligible for submission, as are online news photos, and video/multimedia. (Photos selected as E&P’s "Photos of the Week" or "Photos of the Month" between September 13, 2008 and September 13, 2009, are automatically entered.)
In addition to News (Spot/General), Features, Sports, and Mulitple Images/Photo Essay, new categories include: Portraits - a photo of individuals or small groups of people, a flower or tree, still life, a special building, etc.; and Video/Multimedia - video and/or multimedia presentations--including photo galleries--on the Web (I expect National Geographic to blow this category away). Also new this year are Unpublished Photos on Assignment and Best Photos from a News Web site without a print component. Stand-alone submissions without print stories of any kind will be accepted.
Circulation groups are:

Digital Divination
Acknowledging the unstoppable alchemy of digital media, E&P has added new features to the 2009 contest, including a People’s Choice Award Contest with a viral option for peer voting and an upcoming E&P Photos of the Year Facebook page.
This has been a runaway freight train of a year so far, and I can't wait to see what you consider contest-worthy, impactful, and magic.
